Books about Africa

In an open-sided lounge area at one of the bush camps, I picked up Alexandra Fuller’s Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight.  More info.  I couldn’t put it down.  At one point she describes the call of the cape dove as “Work harder. Work harder.”  As I was reading those words, I could hear the cape dove call. It was so cool.  Later I mentioned that to a safari guide named Golden, and told me they only say that until 5 PM.  After 5:00 their call is “Drink lager. Drink lager.”

Alexandra Fuller became my new favorite author.  I love all her books.

Very enlightening is Peter Godwin’s When a Crocodile Eats the Sun. More info.  Read it if you are trying to understand how a successful farming country like Rhodesia became Zimbabwe where the government in September of 2013, estimated that 75% of the population would go hungry in 2014.  It must be worse now.
